trabajando rudimentariamente

Mexican brooch.
A mix of 2d and 3d.
Crudely chiseled sheet (there were no saw blades in old trad jewellery, young smiths!)
Formal symmetrical composition, but sort-of wonky
Most likely made to a well established design formula, but the immediate low-tech execution gives it a lively spirit! I think that is partly un-intentional- as if the speedy, almost flippant methodology of the artisan allows an unselfconscious awesomeness to creep in!
(is this related to noaesthetics somehow?)
Some students ask me how precise they should be in their making- I say there are different types of precision; you could be
 German ( exacting engineering)
or
Mexican ( ¡trabajando rudimentariamente con espiritu!)

(I totally made up that spanish- does it make any sense??)

  1. I dig the mexican aesthetic and engineering...although coming from the german way myself..I create between the 2 realms..
